Lawrence Melton, Jr.
A brief history: Born October 9, 1942 in Tyler, Texas then in 1958 moved to Barstow, California where he attended Barstow Union high school until 1960 then joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana as crew chief on F-100 fighter aircraft. His unit the 613th. TFS known as the "Squids" was part of the 401st. Tactical Air Command. Discharged in 1964, Melton returned home to Tyler, Texas where he worked at various jobs for minimum wage, then moved to Dallas and worked for an Architectural firm, got married, moved back to Alexandria, Louisiana and worked for the Baptist Message, a religious magazine. In 1967 he returned to Dallas, worked for a printing company, an advertising art studio, then in 1973 started his own advertising business. In 1979 he met Forrest Carter, the author of the book Gone to Texas and decided to try his hand at writing. Melton's first book A TRAIL IS NEVER COLD has become a Texas best seller and was the book of the month at Borders Books in Dallas. In 1997 A Trail Is Never Cold was the number one best seller for the entire year at Hastings Books and Records in Tyler, Texas. And although Henderson County was where this famous sheriff worked there were no bookstores in the entire county willing to carry this book. However, thanks to the Brookshire Food Stores, the Athens Daily Review and the Anderson Family Drugs, it outsold all other No. 1 "best sellers" in the county. The book is out of print at this time but you may still find copies at the "Athens Daily Review" in Athens, Texas. If you wish to order a copy from the Daily Review, phone 903-675-5626. We understand that only two thousand copies of this book remain, so the price may have increased somewhat. No future printings are scheduled.
